Why I Wrote This Story About My Son
For the longest time, I believed highly successful individuals were a special breed. I always felt there was this intangible element to success that resided in some people, but not in everyone. I think a lot of people feel this way.
Of course, I believe we are all capable of attaining certain degrees of success, but that big-time success, well that is reserved for a small group of people.
My opinion of success has now changed. I believe anyone can be, do or have anything they desire if they acquire the proper knowledge and apply it properly. I came to this conclusion after watching my deaf and autistic son Thomas attain a goal no one, and I mean no one thought possible.
Thomas wanted to get a driver’s license and buy a car. It was his dream, his desire. It was the one thing that would give him independence, and control over his life.
As his father, I always wanted the best for him, but I knew there was no way possible for him to achieve this. I was convinced he didn't have the capabilities.
Needless to say, Thomas proved us all wrong. This story, Thomas’ Desire, is an account of how he was able to accomplish it.
I wrote this story to give hope to those doubting themselves. To all those people who want to be someone special, who want to do something awesome, but don't believe they have what it takes. I’ve been there, I know how it feels. Years ago, I remember sitting in the crowd and seeing my colleagues get the awards and all the recognition. I remember having that pit in my stomach, afraid that someone would ask me why I wasn’t up there on stage. I know what it feels like when you want to win, but you're not able to. I am sure many of you have felt exactly the same way.
I wrote this story the way Thomas approached his goal. I kept it short, and simple, removed all the fluff, and stuck to the bare facts. After all, that’s what Thomas did. He ignored all the chatter, kept the process neat and clean, and worked the plan applying these 8 simple principles. Nothing more, nothing less.
I can’t express how proud I am of Thomas. He did something everyone felt was unattainable. He proved that there is nothing you can’t have if you truly desire it.
